Thick reinforcement threads woven into the Ripstop-fabrics makes them resistant to tearing and ripping. These threads are interwoven at regular intervals in a crosshatch pattern to prevent the fabric from tearing further than to the next reinforcement thread. Ripstop can consist of multiple fabrics such as nylon, cotton, or polyester. 

This material is lightweight, still solid with excellent tear resistance. That is why Ripstop is commonly used in parachutes, hot air balloons, sails, and outdoor equipment.
